Travel Diaries: 48 hrs in Budapest

Budapest View from Gellért Hill

Budapest is by far one of my favorite cities in Europe (although I’ve only visited  two others..so far)! The people are awesome, the architecture is amazing, and the club scene was too cool.  From the Thermal Baths to the rich history, Budapest is the besHt!

WHERE TO STAY

The hotel we stayed in was called Central Hotel 21. It’s a very affordable hotel with a  courtyard style entry to the very modern rooms with one of the biggest bathrooms I’ve ever seen!  It is walking distance to everything happening in the city.  A convenient store was located right across the street, an amazing Indian restaurant was just around the corner, and there’s a cute little bar in the lobby – serving both lattes and liquor! The price ranges from $30-$60 / night. If you’re fancy.. go for the Budapest Four Seasons, or check out this chic AirBnB for $20 / night.

WHAT TO DO

Széchenyi Thermal Baths

This was something I was most excited to do – go to the Széchenyi Thermal Baths! It’s one of the main attractions in Budapest and has been named the world’s largest outdoor spa. There are multiple hot pools, saunas galore (perfect for the freezing temps outside), and beautiful design around every corner. We had to take a train to get there, as it was on the other side of the city from our hotel (which was close to the Ferris Wheel). There was a bit of line, small entry fee, then you get a key and towel, change in the locker room- then you’re set to explore, find your favorite nook and lose yourself in a thermal bath trance.

Go to the Ruin Bars – Szimpla Kert

One of the coolest things to do in Budapest! A neighborhood full of old factory buildings that was previously the Jewish quarter, was converted into an underground mecca of clubs in the early 2000’s .  Some bars here are cozy and relaxed, more are house party rooms, but all are weird and amazing! Going to the bathroom here was a whole new experience I was not prepared for – have a little money  to pay and don’t forget to grab some TP. There’s a variety of rooms blasting different music to dance to and interesting art as far as the eye can see. With the plethora of option of bars, getting a drink from the bar was not an issue- although we did go in November. Lots of courtyard areas that might be more enjoyable during the warmer months. P.S. Always use the buddy system and keep an eye on your things- don’t get got…,
